This guide will take you through the steps of adding and organising products within the Shop tool.
Add a product
- Click the 'Shop' button within the main toolbar. From the 'Product List' tab, click the 'Add product' button.
- Your product editor page will appear. Here you can enter all details related to the product. the 'Product Name' should be a brief description of the product for sale. The 'Description' can be more detailed- to include for example product materials and dimensions.
The quantity is set to ‘Unlimited’ by default but you can deselect that and type in the actual number of items you have in stock. We wanted to set the quantity to 3 in this case. If you set a quantity, each time you sell a product the stock number will decrease automatically. If your product is custom-made you can still keep the unlimited option on.
Remember that you can set notifications so that you can be warned when your items are running low. Go to the 'Settings' tab > 'General Settings' > 'Low Stock Notification'. The email will be sent to the email address used for your PayPal account.
SKU stands for Stock Keeping Unit. This is a way of identifying a product through an external stock management service. If you have something like that set up, then this is where you would drop the ID/Number. The SKU number entered will then appear when making the payment on PayPal as the item number. We recommend you do enter a SKU for all your products, especially if you have a lot of product options.
Do you have products that come in different colours or sizes? This is where you can add those options. Tick the 'Product Options' box to open the Product Options manager. If you already defined a price for the product it’s assumed that you’ll be charging the same amount for these variations. But you can manually amend prices if you do want to charge more/less. You can add up to 50 product options per product and both price and quantity can change for each one.
For the moment, you can only choose one set of options i.e. you can’t have colours as well as sizes. It’s one or the other. However, you can get around this by combining options, such as:
- Red/Small, Red/Medium, Red/Large
- Blue/Small, Blue/Medium, Blue/Large
You can manually amend the stock of an individual item too. Using the drop-down menu on the right-hand side of each option, you can show when a product is Available, Coming soon, Hidden or Sold out. In the customer view, all the options you set will appear in a drop-down menu next to the price of the product.
You can add a maximum of five images to a single product, so your customers can get a good look at what they’re buying. These can be uploaded from the file manager by clicking 'Add Images' or the little + sign on an empty image frame. Choose the best image that shows the product to be featured as the main image in the product catalogue. You can also drag and drop to rearrange your images in this panel. These are then viewed by a customer when they click through to the Product Detail (which we will be getting to shortly).
At this point you can add your product to any of the categories you’ve created. Just click the Categories bar to open up the options and make your selection. Note: If you haven’t created the category yet, save the product and go to ‘Product List’ to create the new category. You then can drag the new item into the new category created.
SEO Meta Tags
Click the 'SEO Meta Tags' bar to open up the meta tag options. Here you can add custom meta tags to individual products. Just add the item’s name, relevant keywords and a brief description. Hover over the blue 'i' information icons for further hints and tips. Adding meta data will help your item appear when potential customers are searching for similar items in search engines.
You can change the availability of a product using the 'Status' menu. This allows you to always show a full range of what you do offer, without risking a customer paying for something you can’t currently provide.
